Leicester's Caribbean Carnival is held every August and starts in Victoria Park. It brings the street of the city alive with colour and excitement from the troupes and floats participating in the annual street parade.

The Leicester Caribbean Carnival started way back in 1985 as a way to keep the community's heritage alive on these rather chillier shores.  Now, more than twenty years on the carnival has expanded to include much of Leicester's ever changing community, bringing in aspects of every minority culture in the city and inviting all-comers regardless of race, age or religion to take part.

The Carnival has always been celebrated on the first Saturday of August in Victoria Park in order to coincide with the anniversary of the emancipation of slavery.  The celebrations begin with the wonderful parade which takes in Leicester's most well known points, weaving through the city centre led by the extravagantly dressed Carnival Queen and accompanied by uplifting music intended to get all of the city out on the streets.

As the parade returns to Victoria Park the community fun starts up with the whole area given over to fun and celebration.  The performances, stalls and games make this the biggest event of its kind in the Midlands and the ideal way to celebrate an exciting community on the up. 

This is where you can listen to a steel band, watch some vibrant dance demos, pick up some unusual and beautiful works of art for your home or try out some deliciously authentic Caribbean food courtesy of the many private individuals or restaurateurs who turn out for the celebration.
